With the sheer volume of promotion and column inches devoted to Alli, it should have been and would have been the best selling non prescription slimming pill of all time.

The FDA’s (Food and Drugs Administration) approval gave Alli a unique status.

Dr Vidhu Bansal-Dev, of GlaxoSmithKline’s American weight loss and health and wellbeing advisor, said: “It (Alli) is the most extensively studied weight-loss drug on the planet and proven to be beneficial to those wanting to lose weight.”

But Gareth Williams, professor of medicine at Bristol University, doubts that the results gathered from the clinical studies on highly motivated individuals will be replicated among the general public who are not under controlled “workshop” conditions

He (Gareth Williams) wrote in the British Medical Journal: ‘Taking it (Alli) without medical supervision may achieve an average daily energy deficit of only 100 kcal – equivalent of leaving a few chips on a plate or eating an apple instead of ice cream.’

He also wrote that taking Alli was the equivalent of having “10 to 20 minutes of sex”.
