Gastric Bypass For Weight Loss

Should I Have A Gastric Bypass

It seems every couple of days there is story in the press relating to gastric bypass, the surgical procedure also known as stomach stapling whereby an extremely overweight person has their stomach rather unceremoniously operated on to reduce its capacity.

Two recent celebrities that have allegedly undergone the procedure are Fern Britton and Vanessa Feltz with varying degrees of success.

A recent story in the Daily Mail featured a 27 year old woman who lost 14st 4lb after her procedure. The Staffordshire woman went from 24st 2lb to just 9st 12lb – losing a stone immediately after the op. Now it seems her current dilemma is what to do about her excessive skin.

For every success story involving gastric bypass surgery you will no doubt read one that was not quite so successful – it is not without risks.

What Is A Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery involves making the stomach physically reduced and allowing food to bypass a region of the small intestine.

The bypass makes your stomach feel satisfied more rapidly than when your stomach was its original size. This in turn significantly reduces the size of the food portion you can eat.

Bypassing this region of the stomach results in fewer calories being absorbed. less calories absorbed means a reduction in excess fat.

The operation involves the stomach being made smaller by creating a small pouch towards the top of the stomach using special surgical staples or alternatively a small plastic band.

The smaller stomach is joined to the central part of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the other parts and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

Sounds complex.

Where To Go For A Consultation

Before you go to any private clinic make an appointment to visit your GP. Gastric Bypass surgery is not suitable for everyone.

5 Slimming Tips

5 Best Free Slimming Tips

As we seem to be deepening into economic crisis it can be used as a great excuse to delay and put off that diet due to lack of funds.

Losing weight need not cost a lot, in fact here are 5 slimming tips that are either free or cost virtually nothing.

1. Suppress appetite with water – did you know that water is a very effective natural appetite suppressant. Sometimes when we feel the onset of hunger is not necessarily food that our body craves, it could rehydration.

The signals that our brain gives to our body that it is hungry is very close to the signal for thirst – so a simple glass of water can dull the appetite and prevent us from taking on a few hundred needless calories.

2. Detox once a week – Diet does not mean to “go without” but there occasions when it wont hurt. Once a week give your body a rest and only eat fresh fruit and vegetables giving meat and carbohydrates a welcome break.

Replace your morning coffee or tea with water or fruit juice – and walk rather than drive if possible.

3. Chew your food well – there have been numerous and well documented studies into the the effects of chewing your food properly. By properly, this means around 40 times per mouthful.

In a cross section of studies, subjects who chewed their food for approximately 4o times per mouthful felt the effects of satiety (fullness) quicker than those that didn’t. The result of reaching satiety quicker means taking on less calories.

4. Dont buy snacks in bulk – using the principle of “out of sight, out of mind” – simply hiding your favourite snacks is not really good enough, you will always find them in the end.

Leave your favourite chocolate bar in the shop, so when you absolutely cannot resist temptation you have to make the effort and visit the shop to buy the. Only buy single bars and not multi-packs

5. Spice Up Your Food – the media appears to have an obsession lately with adding spices to foods. This is not without good reason.

Latest study suggests that spices such as cayenne pepper , cinnamon and turmeric can significantly help prevent and reduce the build up of fat.

Cayenne pepper in particular is definitely worth investigating.

Can Spices Help You To Slim

Spices Can Help You Slim

A clinical study released recently (by the Penn State University) links the use of spices to the slimming process.

In particular spices such as paprika, turmeric, cayenne pepper and cinnamon can help prevent the build up of too much body fat.

A typical modern diet contains a high percentage of fats and carbohydrates and although necessary as they provide us with energy, can lead to a build up of fat reserves that will never get used.

Too much fat reserve can lead to obesity which increases the risk of heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

When we eat foods with a high percentage of fat the fat that is not used immediately to form our fuel or energy gets turned into triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat that is common in the blood. Eating foods with spice can reduce the level of triglycerides by up to 30%.

Many experts within the industry connected to slimming and weight loss have thought this for some time – but now, over the last few years real concrete evidence has come to light.

One of the spices that is creating the most interest is cayenne pepper (also known as red hot chili pepper and capsicum) – the properties contained in the spice can help burn and prevent the build up of excess body fat.

Cayenne pepper can reduce appetite, raise the metabolism, burn calories, reduces body mass and reduces body fat.

If you have been looking for a reason to start the diet the you have always promised yourself – maybe adding spices to your meals would be an ideal starting point.
